Teaching and Scholarly Interests
Professor Paul is a scholar of Chinese linguistics whose research examines how language and gesture work together to convey meaning and shape human communication. Her work focuses on motion events, cross-linguistic patterns, and linguistic typology, with particular attention to how speakers coordinate verbal and gestural expressions across languages with different structural characteristics. By examining how language-specific patterns are reflected in speech and gesture, she seeks to understand how people conceptualize and communicate their experiences and how linguistic diversity sheds light on the relationship between language and thought. Her research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals spanning linguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science, including Lingua, Journal of Child Language, Language Learning, Language and Cognition, Cognitive Science, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, and Scientific Reports. She has also authored Chinese language textbooks that support language learning and instruction.
Professor Paul is also a musician who performs on traditional Chinese instruments and shares Chinese music to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. She teaches Chinese language and culture courses.
